Ok, someone was talking about technology and what is on the horizon and it got me to think? Yeah I know scary thing that! but I wanted to hear from some of the computer types out there on what they thought would be the next big thing. back in the 90's the Internet was the big deal. I remember getting on it in 93 when it was colleges and a few maybe a handful of ISP's and the good old shell accounts.
I knew back then it was going to go commercial and if I had used half my brain probably could have made some money off that knowledge.
So, when it comes to computers, or technology as a hole what is the next really big thing?
WEll right now I think it's the integration of computer technology and devices we use on a daily basis, technologies such as rfid (radio frequency ID tags) and Blue Tooth that allow devices to communicate with each other and go directly online are all the rage .. your computer can monitor your fridge and see the experation date on things in there and print out shopping list, your microwave can go online to download cooking insructions for the food currently in there etc. The other big initiative is the creation os wireless networks wherever you are, currently wi fi technology and cell phone g3 tehnology are in a head to head race to become the dominant means of providing the communication links. The net should be accessible from anywhere with almost any device, that's the idea. Of course this is not directly the "next big thing" because its already happening, but I think thenext big craze will come from this work currently being develped and marketed. Cool invention recently include e.g. putting a cash balance on your cell/mobile phone and being able to pay with it directly at stores, bars etc rather than taking your wallet, this is already becoming a big thing in Tyokyo since people always have their phones with them but do not necessarily aways want to take a wallet. Europe is launching Galileo which is their version of GPS satellites and the networks are supposed to collaborate so that you can detect your location within 6 feet no matter where you are, even on a busy city street and once that technology is in places we'll start seeing improved gps technology . I think phone services will be moving increasingly to Voice over IP and the telephone as we know it, I predict may disappear over the next 10 years or even shorter time span.
cheers
